Dan Staples Woos the Crowd with Solid Edge ST7
Solid Edge ST7 received loads of applause and shouts during the session announcing the latest release this week at Solid Edge University (SEU) in Atlanta.

Dan Staples, Vice President, Solid Edge Development, Siemens PLM Software and his companion Oliver Duncan of Siemens PLM Software talked attendees through some of the 1300 user enhancements.

But first Staples went over four key things they want their customers to achieve.

1. Accelerate Your 3D modeling

2. Streamline you design management

3. Power up with new apps

4. Enjoy an amazing user experience

Since there are so many enhancements I’m going to cover the ones that got the most applause first, then in the next week or two share some more.

Part to Sheetmetal

Attendees seemed to be happy with the enhancements here. For starters ST7 has much improved sketch feedback. The focus here was on speedier design four creating sheet metal parts. To create a sheet metal part you can just start clicking the edges.

You can also wrap sheet metal around solid parts, inside or out. And now there is a quick method for complex sheet metal design. Eight corner treatments are available as well.

Sheetmetal enhancements are 5x faster in ST7 than ST6.

Standards- based Holes

As Staples pointed out their customers place tens of thousands of holes a day so this ones a biggie.

To begin with there is a brand new hole interface that’s more intuitive. There are different ways of dimensioning the thread of a hole. In the Hole Options Box you can choose from standard, subtype, size, etc., and get the right dimension the first time.

In addition you can specify bolt size and fit for the correct size of a hole. And there is widespread international standard support.

Blank Body

Blank body offers a new way to do features and it’s easy to use flattened blank from any 3d model. It’s valuable for upholstery costing estimation and can make flat patterns for upholstery.

Staples pointed out that normally people pay lots of money to get these extra features. Blank body is included with Solid Edge Classic and Premium.

3D Sketch

This new functionality gives users access to 3D sketch tools. For example you can put in 3D sketch fillets if you need to round off corners. You’ll also notice a Quick View Cube on the interface so you can quickly navigate what you’re looking at.

Plus, in ST7 names of planes come up so it’s always clear what you’re working on. And this is where synchronous comes into play if you want to make geometry changes.

3D Sketch is available in Part, Assembly and Sheet Metal. It’s designed to make it easier to create components across multiple planes. As well you can design components swept along a 3D path faster. And there is an additional method for routing pipes, tubes and wires.

Duplicate Component

Duplicate component was another crowd pleaser. This new technology is ideal for new users who need to insert components into assemblies.

There are also more right click options. There’s a new patterning method. There’s rapid duplication based on existing locations of other components, along with intelligent orientation functionality.

It’s now 10x faster in ST7 to insert a component.

Draft

Enhancements here include dynamic drawing view display for all view types, associate annotations, parts list component highlight and thumbnails. In addition expect streamlined individual part or sub-assembly view creation. And automatic coordinate dimensions can be created with one click. Coordinate dimensions are now 10x faster.

Attendees also seemed to be pretty excited about the new announcement that Luxion’s Keyshot rendering software is now built into ST7, available in Classic and Premium options.

Stay tuned for more on this and other enhancements including Dan Staples’ favorite enhancements.
