2009 Rapid Prototyping/3D Printing Industry Spotlight
The rapid prototyping industry has seen many advancements in recent years, including an increase in adoption from architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) professionals and this year in particular, breakthroughs in various manufacturing fields such as the medical industry. This is seen with the introduction of EBM technology used for building customized orthopedic and cranial implants and new processes such as hybrid metal manufacturing. Vendors have also made headway with new desktop 3D printers in the $10,000-$15,000 range, including Solido’s SD300 Pro, 3D Systems’ V-Flash and Dimension 3D Printing’s Uprint. In other news, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has deemed additive manufacturing the official name for references to rapid prototyping. Terry Wohlers of Wohlers Associates, who also refers to the technology as additive manufacturing, thinks additive manufacturing will replace rapid prototyping as the dominant term, because it better reflects the capabilities of the technology.

Speaking of Wohlers, this industry spotlight includes views from many industry consultants including him, Marc Halpern of Gartner Inc., Terry Wohlers of Wohlers Associates and Todd Grimm of T.A. Grimm & Associates. Also included are representatives from 3D printing manufacturing companies, including Z Corporation, Dimension 3D Printing and many others. Learn about the latest product offerings, industry trends and more in this informative series of articles on rapid prototyping.
